Chair of Kazakh Mazhilis Reflects on Year’s Accomplishments

Kazakhstan’s Lower House of Parliament, Mazhilis, has been busy considering draft laws during its current session. As reported by the Kazinform on Dec. 25, a total of 106 draft laws have been discussed, with 37 of them being adopted and 19 signed by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

Yerlan Koshanov, the chairman of Mazhilis, highlighted some of the most important laws that have been passed. One significant development is the implementation of constitutional norms focusing on social justice. Additionally, the access to foreign education has been expanded, allowing winners of international Olympiads and scientific competitions to benefit from the Bolashak International Scholarship.

Furthermore, efforts have been made to improve the health of Kazakhstan’s society, including measures to address gambling addiction. The Mazhilis also passed laws to protect victims of domestic violence, garnering international appreciation and recognition from the United Nations.

In line with the legislative agenda, Mazhilis has also adopted a new Budget Code to support the country’s economic policy. Koshanov emphasized that these laws will enhance resource management at the local level, setting the stage for more efficient governance in the future.

A notable highlight of the session was the enactment of a law granting special status to Turkistan, a city of historical significance in Kazakhstan and the Turkic world. This move aims to empower local self-government, facilitate problem-solving, attract investments, and boost economic growth in the region. Koshanov believes that the new status will not only strengthen Kazakhstan’s national identity and cultural heritage but also contribute significantly to the overall development of the country.
