Chelyabinsk gears up to launch high-speed freight trains to Turkmenistan

Chelyabinsk Region Positioned to Become Leading Russian Federation Economy

The Chelyabinsk Region is poised to be one of the top-performing regions in the Russian Federation in terms of gross regional product (GRP). This projection is based on the region’s rich geographical resources, burgeoning industrial sector, abundant human resources, and thriving external relations, particularly with Central Asian countries. Alexey Texler, the head of the region, recently expressed this optimistic view during the presentation of the region’s investment potential at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, as reported by TASS.

Texler highlighted that despite not having oil and gas production and processing capabilities, the Chelyabinsk region currently ranks 11th in terms of GRP among other Russian regions. He emphasized the significance of this achievement given the absence of a key industry. Texler further stated that the region is actively working to break into the top 10 regions in GRP, consistently improving its ranking each year. He confidently predicted that the Chelyabinsk Region will ascend to the top 10 in the near future.

The region’s border with the Republic of Kazakhstan positions it as the prime entry-exit point for collaboration with Central Asian nations, particularly for the industrial Urals. As such, it has emerged as a central hub for cargo consolidation and trade along the North-South corridor, serving as an ideal conduit for working with China through Kazakhstan.

Texler revealed that discussions are underway to launch high-speed freight trains that would traverse Kazakhstan to reach Turkmenistan and Iran, with Chelyabinsk serving as a strategic cargo consolidation point. This initiative would significantly enhance trade and transportation efficiency within the region.

Notably, companies based in the Chelyabinsk region have displayed substantial interest in forging partnerships with Turkmenistan, actively pursuing opportunities for mutual growth. In line with this, the region is in the process of establishing a trade representative office in Turkmenistan.

Last September, as part of a delegation visit to Ashgabat, the Governor of the Chelyabinsk Region, Alexey Texler, held productive meetings with members of the Turkmenistan Government. These discussions focused on exploring avenues for collaboration, with the heads of leading regional enterprises also accompanying Texler. He was also granted an audience with President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, who acknowledged the potential of joint ventures in the design and construction of metallurgical and machine-building plants.

It is worth mentioning that the symbol of Chelyabinsk and the Chelyabinsk region is the camel, depicted on the city and region’s coat of arms and flag. This emblematic figure’s historical significance now finds renewed relevance through the concept of “iron” camels traversing steel routes, symbolizing the region’s progress and connectivity.

Overall, the Chelyabinsk Region’s promising prospects for economic growth and enhanced international collaboration make it a standout contender among Russian regions, driven by its comprehensive resources and strategic geographic location.
