A Vaccination Campaign Launched Against Cholera Epidemic in Zambia
In response to the ongoing cholera epidemic in Zambia, a vaccination campaign has been initiated in the country. The World Health Organization (WHO) has sent oral cholera vaccines to aid in the fight against the epidemic, according to reports in the national press.
Health Minister Sylvia Masebo announced the launch of the campaign, highlighting that the priority is to vaccinate individuals in regions heavily affected by the cholera outbreak. Masebo also noted that there has been a gradual decrease in cholera cases, which is a positive development. She urged individuals to seek medical attention at the hospital rather than attempting to treat themselves at home.
The minister further disclosed that 23 deaths were reported in Lusaka within the past 24 hours, with the majority of fatalities occurring among children under the age of 5 and elderly individuals. Since October 2023, nearly 400 people have lost their lives in Zambia due to the cholera epidemic.
With the vaccination campaign now underway, authorities hope to curb the spread of the disease and prevent further casualties. The efforts to combat the cholera outbreak continue as the country strives to address the public health crisis and protect the well-being of its population.
