Yüksel Arslan’s Recent Comments Raise Tensions Within CHP
Well-known for his close ties with Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mansur Yavaş, independent MP Yüksel Arslan recently made controversial remarks that some speculate were aimed at Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu without directly naming him. This sparked a wave of backlash and advice from Yavaş himself urging Arslan to retract his statements.
The issue initially arose when Mansur Yavaş expressed his discontent at the CHP convention for being informed late about his speaking slot, which then escalated with İmamoğlu cautioning against turning the incident into a party-wide dispute. Following İmamoğlu’s warning, Arslan took to social media to use phrases like “project child,” “political fraudster,” and implied allegiance to terrorist organizations, prompting accusations that his words were directed at İmamoğlu.
Mansur Yavaş swiftly distanced himself from Arslan’s comments, stating that they do not align with his political approach. Despite this, Arslan stood by his remarks, clarifying that they were not targeting İmamoğlu and expressing remorse for unintentionally hurting Yavaş in the process. He also announced his resignation from the presidency of the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality ASKİ Sports Club.
In response to the controversy, İmamoğlu’s advisor Serkan Özcan emphasized the need to respond firmly to such below-the-belt attacks, signaling a broader concern within the party about divisive rhetoric.
