Close Race: Orbán’s Fidesz and Péter Magyar’s Tisza Party Neck and Neck at 3%
Péter Magyar, the leader of the opposition Tisza Party, has strongly refuted claims that his party is pro-war, emphasizing their efforts to promote peace in Ukraine and their opposition to weapons deliveries to the country. In a statement released on Friday, Magyar highlighted the humanitarian aid his party had provided to a children’s hospital in Kyiv that had been bombed, contrasting it with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s failure to condemn the attack. He criticized the ruling Fidesz party for sending Hungarian troops to Chad and investing in weapons factories, suggesting a profit motive in the event of war.
Recent polls have brought attention to the Tisza Party, with the Prime Minister mentioning them for the first time in a radio interview. Magyar accused Orbán of spreading lies about an alliance between Tisza and the Democratic Coalition, emphasizing their focus on moving past the Orbán-Gyurcsány era. He asserted that Orbán’s claims about Tisza’s immigration policies and family support were false, pointing out the government’s failures in various sectors.
Magyar’s speech at a recent demonstration drew criticism from Fidesz MEP Csaba Dömötör, who condemned Magyar’s references to Hitler and labeling public service media employees as “Hitler’s students” as scandalous and unsavoury. Dömötör called for Magyar to be removed from his position as vice-president of the Constitutional Committee, citing a violation of office and calling on the EP president to take action.
As tensions rise between the Tisza Party and the ruling Fidesz party, the focus remains on addressing the issues affecting Hungarians and promoting a vision of unity and progress for the country.
