Coca-Cola European Bottling Unit Recalls Soft Drinks Due to Thyroid-Disrupting Chemical
Coca-Cola’s European bottling unit has issued a recall in three countries – Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands – after discovering a high level of a thyroid-disrupting chemical in some of its soft drinks. The recall was initiated by Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, the company responsible for bottling and distributing Coca-Cola products in Europe, Australia, and parts of Asia.
The affected products, which include popular brands such as Coke, Fanta, Sprite, Tropico, and Minute Maid, were found to contain elevated levels of chlorate. Chlorate is a byproduct of chlorine disinfectants commonly used in food processing and water treatment. High levels of chlorate in food and drinking water can have negative health effects, particularly by interfering with the iodine intake of the thyroid and temporarily altering thyroid hormone levels.
While the recall initially focuses on the three aforementioned countries, it is important to note that limited quantities of the affected drinks may have also been distributed to other regions.
