Constantine 2: Director Announced, Updates on the Film’s Status Revealed

A Year Later, Constantine Sequel Starring Keanu Reeves Makes Progress

It has been a year since the announcement of the highly anticipated sequel to the 2005 DC Vertigo comic book adaptation “Constantine,” which starred Keanu Reeves. Director Francis Lawrence recently provided an update on the progress of the project.

The original film, featuring Reeves as John Constantine, the supernatural exorcist and demonologist from the “Hellblazer” comics, was a box office success, grossing over $200 million. After Reeves expressed his desire to reprise the role of John Constantine, the sequel was officially confirmed, sparking great excitement among fans.

The most recent update on the project came from screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, who revealed that they had developed the story for the sequel but had not yet started writing the script. Goldsman is currently focused on another project, “I Am Legend 2.”

Lawrence, who was promoting his recent directorial work on “Hunger Games” prequel “A Song of Birds and Snakes,” shared some insights on the current status of the sequel. He confirmed that they now have control over the character rights, which was a significant hurdle to overcome.

Lawrence stated, “Constantine 2 was obviously held back by the writers’ strike, and we had to jump through a lot of hoops to regain control of the character because Vertigo was under someone else’s control. Now we have control.

Keanu, Akiva Goldsman, and I have been in meetings, bouncing ideas around for the story, and there are still more meetings to be had – the script has to be written – but we’re really hoping to get to the point where we want to do Constantine 2 and make a truly R-rated version of it.

Lawrence had previously expressed the intention of making “Constantine 2” an R-rated film, targeting an adult audience. The sequel is expected to be an “Elseworlds” production, separate from the larger DC Universe, similar to Matt Reeves’ upcoming “The Batman” films. However, there is currently no confirmed release date for the sequel.

Fans of the comic book adaptation eagerly anticipate the return of Keanu Reeves as John Constantine and hope that the project will come to fruition soon.
