Continued Restoration of Macedonian Tower | N-Life
Edirne Governor Yunus Sezer recently conducted an inspection of the ongoing restoration works at the Macedonian Tower in Edirne. The project is being carried out under the supervision of the Edirne Surveying and Monuments Directorate of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, with Governor Sezer overseeing the progress and procedures involved.
During his visit, Governor Sezer engaged with officials and workers, discussing the work being done both inside the tower and on its terrace. He emphasized the importance of hastening the landscaping efforts on the walls and urged for the project to be completed in a timely manner.
In addition to the Macedonian Tower, Governor Sezer also visited the Excavations-Hadrianopolis Walls Environment and Ruins Arrangement, where he was joined by Provincial Culture and Tourism Director Kemal Soytürk and Macedonian Tower Restoration Project Consultant, Dr. İsmet Osmanoğlu from Trakya University Faculty of Architecture.
The Macedonian Tower, built by Hadrian during his reign in the Roman Empire, remains as the only surviving tower on the ancient walls of Edirne. Originally constructed with wooden floors and clocks by Hacı İzzet Pasha, the tower was later named the “clock tower” and served as a fire observation point. However, it suffered significant damage during an earthquake in 1953, leading to the removal of its floors and clock section.
Restoration efforts on the Macedonian Tower began in the 1990s and are currently underway as part of the “Edirne Old Clock Tower Restoration Project” initiated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The restoration work aims to preserve the historical significance of the tower and is scheduled to be completed by 2025.
The meticulous restoration work being carried out at the Macedonian Tower reflects the commitment to preserving Edirne’s rich cultural heritage and historical structures. As Governor Sezer continues to oversee the progress of the project, the city looks forward to welcoming back this iconic landmark in its renewed glory.
