Defendants’ Request Rejected in Newborn Gang Case – Latest Update from Turkey News

The latest news in the “Newborn Gang” case reveals that the request for recusal made by the defendant’s lawyers has been rejected by the upper court. The case involves 47 defendants, with 26 of them being detained, who are facing charges of allegedly causing the deaths of baby emergency patients and making unfair profits by referring them to neonatal units of private hospitals.
During the hearing at Bakırköy 22nd High Criminal Court on January 14, the request for recusal was sent to the Bakırköy 23rd High Criminal Court, a higher court, for consideration. After evaluating the application, the superior court decided to reject the recusal requests and sent the case file back to the relevant court. The next hearing of the case is scheduled to continue with the same committee on February 18.
The background of the case reveals that the defendants, including a doctor and an ambulance driver, were allegedly part of a criminal organization aiming to manipulate the referral system of neonatal intensive care units for profit. The indictment highlights instances where sick babies were hospitalized longer than necessary, leading to high fees being collected from the Social Security Institution (SGK) and families being charged more money.
The defendants face varying prison sentences, with the leaders of the organization potentially facing up to 582 years and 9 months in prison. Security measures specific to legal entities, such as hospitals and companies, are being demanded in the indictment, with the closure of some establishments and seizure of assets also proposed.
Moreover, four unauthorized defendants have been arrested in connection with the case. Efforts are underway to capture other individuals, including hospital owners and nurses, who are currently on the run. The investigation into the “Newborn Gang” case continues to unfold, with significant developments impacting both the defendants and the healthcare facilities involved.
