Deputy: Women and Children Most Vulnerable to Sexual Exploitation

Human Trafficking Statistics Underrepresent the Real Picture, says Kyrgyz Vice Speaker

During a meeting of the Secretariat of the Council on Migration and Combating Human Trafficking, the Vice Speaker of the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan, Nurlanbek Azygaliev, expressed concerns that statistics do not always accurately reflect the true extent of human trafficking. He emphasized that women and children are particularly vulnerable to sexual exploitation, and highlighted the risks faced by the underage children of migrant workers who are often left without parental care.

Azygaliev also pointed out that there are significant challenges in combating human trafficking, including a lack of practice in detecting crimes and difficulties in collecting evidence. He stressed the need to revise the current national mechanism for detecting victims of human trafficking, but acknowledged that this would require financial resources and well-trained professional experts.

In response to these challenges, training sessions have been conducted at both the national and regional levels with the support of donors and the Migration Council. It is hoped that these efforts will help to improve the detection and prevention of human trafficking in Kyrgyzstan.

The Vice Speaker’s remarks serve as a reminder of the ongoing and evolving nature of the fight against human trafficking, and the need for continued vigilance and action in addressing this serious issue.
