Dozens Killed in Afghanistan by Extreme Weather

At least 60 people have lost their lives and 34 others have been injured in Afghanistan in the past 25 days due to extreme snow, rain, and cold weather conditions, according to Molla Canan Saik, the spokesperson for the Ministry of State Responsible for Natural Disasters of the Afghan interim government.

Saik also reported that over 1600 houses were damaged and thousands of animals perished as a result of the severe weather. In addition, many roads in central and northern provinces such as Bamyan, Ghor, Sar-e Pol, and Nuristan have been closed to transportation.

Efforts are underway to reopen the Saleng Tunnel, which connects the capital Kabul to the northern regions of Afghanistan. Last year, nearly 200 people lost their lives in the country due to adverse weather conditions.

Afghanistan, which has been plagued by conflicts for many years, faces additional challenges from natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, excessive rainfall, and avalanches due to the lack of infrastructure development. The death toll from such disasters may rise as a result.
