Drew Barrymore voices support for Hollywood strike
Hollywood screenwriters have gone on strike for the first time in 15 years due to failed negotiations with the studios about pay. In a show of solidarity, Drew Barrymore, who was due to host the 2023 MTV Movie & Television Awards, announced that she was stepping down. In a statement, the actress said, “I’ve listened to the authors and since I really respect them, I’m refraining from presenting the MTV Movie & TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike.” Barrymore added that she would watch the event from home and encouraged others to do the same. The annual award show, which started on May 8th, honors the best shows of the TV season as well as the best productions of the summer season featuring the movie industry’s blockbusters. The winners are determined by public votes online. Despite stepping down this year, Barrymore has announced that she will be returning to host the MTV Movie & Television Awards in 2024, thanking MTV for being “one of the best partners” she has worked with.
