A 6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Istanbul and Izmir
A powerful 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the Silivri district in Istanbul, sending tremors across the city and its surrounding districts, including Izmir. The earthquake was felt in numerous cities, with Izmir experiencing particularly strong tremors. Sinancan Ozicer, the President of the Izmir Branch of the Chamber of Geophysics Engineers, stated that previous studies had predicted an earthquake off the islands, but it unexpectedly occurred near Silivri, causing significant shaking in the affected areas. The earthquake and subsequent aftershocks helped release built-up energy, but Ozicer warned that the region should remain on alert for 1-2 weeks.
Ozicer explained that the earthquake’s impact on Izmir was due to the ground’s characteristics, specifically its tendency to enlarge during seismic activity. He noted that Izmir’s sandy, water-saturated floors amplify earthquake waves, allowing them to travel over long distances. This geological feature was the primary reason residents in Izmir felt the earthquake despite its origin in Silivri.
In Izmir, areas with weaker ground and deeper rock layers, such as Buca, Gaziemir, Bornova, and Çiğli, experienced the strongest tremors. Coastal regions like Çiğli, Karsiyaka, and Alsancak also felt the effects of the earthquake waves. Despite the epicenter being 500 kilometers away, the earthquake’s magnitude of 6.2 had a significant impact on Izmir.
Ozicer emphasized that although Izmir is prone to earthquakes due to its proximity to fault lines, the risk of a high magnitude earthquake, such as a 7 or above, is lower compared to Istanbul. He stated that Istanbul faces a greater risk of a devastating earthquake, given its geological composition and fault lines.
