“Earthquake Warning: Region at Risk of Magnitude 7 Quake”
Two powerful earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.7 and 7.6 occurred in Pazarcık and Elbistan on February 6, according to earthquake scientist Prof. Dr. Feyzi Bingöl. These earthquakes are rare in Turkey and the world, as they occurred on the same day and in a region where three plates meet. The region became unstable, and thousands of aftershocks occurred in the Eastern Anatolian faults, which will continue for years. Bingöl warned that Adana, Adıyaman, and Malatya will continue to feel the aftershocks, which may last between five to ten years. While there may not be a main-magnitude earthquake, aftershocks up to 6-magnitude may occur. Bingöl also identified Bingöl’s Yedisu district as a region that is pregnant with earthquakes and may potentially produce an earthquake with a magnitude of 7 or close to 7.
