Turkey’s Edremit Olive Oil Receives Geographical Indication Registration from the EU
The Regional Products Fair (YOREX), organized every year for the past 11 years in collaboration with various institutions such as TOBB, Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT), and Antalya Commodity Exchange, has achieved yet another milestone. Following extensive studies on the subject, Turkey has successfully obtained geographical indication registration for another product from the European Union (EU).
Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, the President of TOBB, expressed his congratulations to the Edremit Chamber of Commerce Chairman Ahmet Çetin, the board of directors, council members, and all those who contributed to this achievement. Edremit olive oil now becomes the 13th Turkish product to receive geographical indication registration from the EU.
Ali Çandır, a board member of TOBB, noted that Edremit olive oil joins a prestigious group of 13 products registered with geographical indication in the European Union. This designation ensures protection and recognition of the unique qualities and characteristics specific to these Turkish products. Among the other products already registered are Gaziantep baklava, Aydın fig and chestnut, Malatya apricot, Milas olive oil, Bayramiç white, Taşköprü garlic, Giresun plump hazelnut, Antakya künefe, Suruç pomegranate, Çağlayancerit walnut, Gemlik olive, and Edremit olive oil.
Furthermore, Çandır revealed that an impressive list of 43 products have applied for geographical indication registration in the EU. These include Milas olive oil, which had recently been announced by the European Commission. The application process for these products is still ongoing and waiting for approval. Some of the notable products in line for registration are Afyonkarahisar pastrami and sausage, İnegöl meatballs, Kayseri pastrami, sausage and ravioli, Pistachios, Edremit Bay green scratched olives, Maraş pastries and tarhana, Gaziantep melengic coffee, Araban garlic, butter from Erzurum, Tonya butter, Erzurum water pastry, Tony’s pastrami, sausage and ravioli, olive oil from Aydın Memecik olive, Ipsakalacic olive oil, Ipsakalacic olive olive oil, Ipsakala or flower okra, Bursa black fig, Hopa anchovy bread, Safranbolu saffron, Manisa sultani seedless grape and mesir paste, Kilis olive oil, Bingol honey, Bursa peach, Ezine cheese, Rize tea, Urla gum artichoke, Ayas tomato, Hüyük strawberry, Isparta rose oil, Silifke olive groats, Adana pearl, Hataylis mullet turnip, and Sinop chestnut honey.
The successful registration of Edremit olive oil adds to the growing list of Turkish products attaining international recognition for their unique qualities. Turkey’s rich agricultural and culinary heritage continues to gain prominence, paving the way for future success in the global market.
