Elegant Art Nouveau Posters Shine in the Spotlight

An exhibition showcasing Hungarian poster art and material culture from the Art Nouveau (Secession) era will open on Friday at the Hungarian National Gallery as part of the Bartók Spring International Art Weeks.

Titled “The Art of Life – Art Nouveau Posters and Material Culture of the Hungarian Secession (1895–1914),” the exhibition will feature over 200 artifacts including books, magazines, applied art objects, ceramics, and furniture.

Annamária Vigh, Deputy Director General of the Museum of Fine Arts and the Hungarian National Gallery, emphasized the importance of Hungarian poster art during the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, which produced work of lasting international significance.

The exhibition will showcase a unique urban world, reflecting theaters, cabarets, baths, and various sports events. It aims to highlight the evolution of the poster genre in an international context, featuring works by renowned artists such as József Rippl-Rónai, János Vaszary, Károly Ferenczy, Alfons Mucha, Gustav Klimt, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

Additionally, the exhibition will provide insights into the urban lifestyle and culture of the turn of the 20th century, including bourgeois homes, women’s fashion, leisure activities, and nightlife. Women are depicted prominently in the posters, showcasing various roles from cosmopolitan ladies to ethereal muses.

The exhibition, running until October 5, is supported by key professional partners and is accompanied by a bilingual Hungarian-English catalog. The MVM Group serves as the main sponsor of the exhibition.

Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the vibrant and dynamic world of Hungarian poster art and material culture from the Art Nouveau era at the Hungarian National Gallery.
