
Elon Musk’s Next Mission: Autonomous Driving Talks with Chinese Officials

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, recently met with Chinese Premier Li Jiang in Beijing to discuss further cooperation between China and the USA in the automotive industry. During the meeting, Li emphasized China’s commitment to providing greater market access to foreign companies like Tesla and ensuring better service assurance.
Li praised Tesla’s “giga factory” in Shanghai and its success in the Chinese market as a shining example of economic and commercial cooperation between the two countries. Musk, in turn, expressed his readiness to deepen cooperation with China for mutual benefit.
One key topic of discussion was Tesla’s autonomous driving technologies. Musk requested permission to use these technologies in China, highlighting the potential for growth in the new energy vehicle sector. Grace Tao, Tesla’s Vice President of Foreign Affairs, also emphasized the importance of autonomous driving in a published article in People’s Daily.
Tesla’s giga factory in Shanghai, which started production in 2019, has quickly become the company’s largest production facility outside the USA. The factory can produce up to 1 million electric cars per year, with plans to expand capacity to 1.45 million. The majority of the factory’s workforce is made up of Chinese citizens, showcasing Tesla’s commitment to localization in the industry.
