Energy Minister denounces compulsory solar panel installations in Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan’s Minister of Energy, Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov, has taken a stand against the forced installation of solar panels, particularly in cases involving businesses in the Syrdarya region. In a recent interview with the Lolazor podcast, Mirzamakhmudov emphasized that the Ministry of Energy does not support or mandate such actions and encouraged affected entrepreneurs to report any coercion directly to his office.
The Minister clarified that the recent increase in electricity and natural gas tariffs for businesses was meant to promote the voluntary adoption of green energy, not to impose it. Despite receiving reports from business owners facing pressure to install solar panels, Mirzamakhmudov reiterated that such practices are unlawful and would be dealt with accordingly.
The issue of forced solar panel installations came to light in September when reports emerged of businesses being threatened with power cuts if they did not comply. The Ministry of Energy promptly responded, stating that forcing solar panel installations goes against the law and firmly rejecting such practices.
Economist Otabek Bakirov also chimed in on the issue, suggesting that incentives should be used instead of coercion to encourage businesses to embrace solar energy. While the practice of forcing installations had diminished after the tariff hike, there are concerns about its resurgence in certain areas.
When asked about this resurgence, Minister Mirzamakhmudov expressed his confusion and emphasized that the Ministry is not responsible for power disconnections. He urged affected parties to reach out directly to address the issue at hand.
As Uzbekistan transitions towards sustainable energy solutions, the government’s stance remains clear: businesses should not be compelled to adopt solar energy, and any attempts to force them will not be tolerated. The Minister’s statement underscores the country’s commitment to green technology and the importance of promoting voluntary and lawful practices in the energy sector.
