EU Energy Ministers Agree to Continue Saving Natural Gas
The EU Council has announced that energy ministers from member states have agreed to continue saving natural gas at a meeting held in Brussels. This decision comes as part of efforts to ensure a sufficient level of gas storage for the upcoming winter period.
According to the statement released, member countries have agreed to voluntarily reduce gas demand in order to meet storage targets. The gas demand of member countries will continue to be reduced by 15 percent below the 2017-2022 average until March 2025.
The gas saving practice in EU countries was initially put in place in response to the Russia-Ukraine war and subsequent energy crisis. Originally set to end on March 31, the decision to extend the practice for an additional year has been made to further address energy security concerns.
By continuing with these demand reduction measures, EU countries aim to enhance their energy resilience and ensure stable gas supplies in the face of potential disruptions.
