EU Investigates Meta and TikTok’s Content Compliance Following X
EU Commission Requests Information from Meta and TikTok Regarding Spread of Illegal Content and Disinformation
In response to allegations of the spread of illegal content and disinformation, particularly related to terrorism, violent publications, and hate speech, the EU Commission has officially requested information from Meta and TikTok. This action is part of the implementation of the Digital Services Act (DSA), aimed at regulating digital platforms.
The EU Commission has given both Meta and TikTok until October 25 to provide the requested information. These platforms, classified as “very large online platforms,” must comply with the EU’s new digital rules that came into effect in August. These rules include measures to curb the spread of illegal content and prevent the dissemination of disinformation.
Under the new digital rules, the EU has the authority to impose fines of up to 6 percent of the global turnover of digital platforms found in violation. Additionally, for repeated violations, the activities of these platforms may be terminated within the EU region. The EU’s determination to enforce these regulations was made evident last week when an investigation against an undisclosed entity was launched.
With the increasing presence and impact of social media platforms in society, the EU is taking proactive steps to address concerns regarding the spread of harmful content and disinformation. By holding major digital platforms accountable, the EU aims to ensure a safer and more responsible digital environment for its citizens.
