EU MPs Accuse Israel of Acting with Impunity

The European Parliament recently held a session titled “Annual report on the situation of human rights and democracy in the world and the EU’s policy on the subject.” The session was attended by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell and represented by Janez Lenarcic, a member of the EU Commission responsible for crisis management and humanitarian aid.
During the session, Lenarcic addressed various human rights issues around the world, including the situation of Russian dissident Alexei Navalny, the Russia-Ukraine War, and Israel’s attacks in Gaza. Lenarcic warned that the human rights situation globally is deteriorating and called for all violations to be addressed without prioritization, stating that there should be no hierarchy among the victims.
Lenarcic also highlighted the EU’s commitment to combatting human rights violations worldwide, mentioning a budget allocation of 1.5 billion euros for 2021-2027 to support these efforts. He assured Parliament that the EU would consider the recommendations outlined in the report.
However, some Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) criticized the report for allegedly ignoring the situation in Gaza. Miguel Urban Crespo called for action against Israel, accusing the country of violating international humanitarian law. Deirdre Clune emphasized the plight of civilians in Gaza, stating that Israel’s actions were a violation of international law.
Ana Miranda and Mick Wallace also criticized the EU for what they perceived as silence towards Israel’s actions in Gaza. Miranda argued that Israel’s occupation and apartheid should be a focal point in all human rights reports, while Wallace criticized the EU for not calling for a ceasefire and ending military support for Israel.
Overall, the session at the European Parliament shed light on various human rights issues globally, with both support and criticism for the EU’s actions and policies towards human rights violations. It remains to be seen how the EU will address these concerns and work towards protecting human rights on a global scale.
