European Parliament to Establish First Official European Order
In a landmark decision, the European Parliament has announced the creation of its first official European order, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration. This significant announcement was made public by press.lv, citing the press service of the European Parliament.
The Schuman Declaration, signed on May 9, 1950, is a pivotal document that laid the groundwork for European unity and integration. It is celebrated annually by EU member states as Europe Day, affirming its role as one of the defining symbols of the European Union.
The declaration, presented by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman, urged European nations to unite despite historical conflicts. It envisioned a cooperative framework open to other European nations aspiring to join, marking the starting point of what would eventually become the European Union.
To honor this momentous occasion, the European Parliament’s Bureau has decided to establish the European Order of Merit, intended to recognize significant contributions to European integration and the promotion of European values. Each year, up to 20 individuals will receive this prestigious distinction. The inaugural awards are expected to be bestowed by 2026, signaling a new era of recognition for those dedicated to furthering the principles of unity and cooperation within Europe.
As Europe reflects on the legacy of the Schuman Declaration, this new order will serve as a testament to the ongoing commitment to shared values and collaboration among nations.
