European Union Agriculture Ministers Discuss Administrative Streamlining

European Union agriculture ministers gathered in Brussels on Monday to address pressing issues within the agricultural sector. Zsolt Feldman, the Agriculture Ministry’s state secretary for farming and rural development, highlighted the need to reduce administrative burdens faced by farmers and discussed ways to streamline procedures for amending national strategic plans.

One key topic of discussion was China’s anti-dumping probe of EU dairy products, which raised concerns among several member states. Additionally, challenges posed by the free trade agreement between the EU and Ukraine were noted by some countries.

During the meeting, member states also reviewed a report on the strategic dialogue regarding the future of EU agriculture. While there was support for strengthening farmers’ position in the food value chain, concerns were raised about the allocation of funding for climate neutrality goals. Some members felt that this funding should come from common agricultural policy resources rather than the Just Transition Fund.

In a separate interview, Agriculture Minister István Nagy emphasized the importance of adapting to changing environmental conditions. Reflecting on this summer’s drought in Hungary, Nagy discussed the impact on agriculture and highlighted the need for improved irrigation systems and water storage facilities. Despite Brussels rejecting Hungary’s bid for support for an irrigation development program, the minister assured that domestic funds will be utilized for this purpose.

Nagy also acknowledged the widespread effects of drought across Europe, which have even impacted countries with advanced agricultural technologies. The need for proactive measures to mitigate the effects of climate change on agriculture was emphasized, as farmers must be prepared to adapt to evolving environmental conditions.
