Europol Detains Over 6,500 Individuals in Operation Against Organized Crime Groups

Europol Arrests Thousands in Global Operation Against Criminal Organizations

In a recent statement, Europol announced that a total of 6,558 individuals, including 197 priority targets, have been apprehended in worldwide operations targeting criminal networks that utilized the “EncroChat” communication platform.

According to the statement, 115 million conversations belonging to criminal organizations were analyzed on EncroChat, which boasted a membership of 60,000 individuals. Through this analysis, authorities were able to identify discussions related to arms and drug trafficking, murder, and money laundering.

The operations led to the seizure of over 300 tons of drug production materials and 923 weapons. Additionally, assets worth approximately 900 million euros, including 271 houses, 83 boats, and 40 planes, along with 739.7 million euros in cash and 154.1 million euros in bank accounts were seized.

The statement highlighted the support of the European Agency for the Development of Judicial Cooperation (Eurojust) in coordinating the global operations, which were initiated by French security forces in 2017.

EncroChat, a secure communication software, enabled users to send messages without leaving any traceable data, offering anonymity and the ability to delete messages with passwords. However, the recent operations have demonstrated the capacity of law enforcement agencies to overcome such encryption methods.

The apprehension of thousands of individuals and the disruption of criminal organizations worldwide signify a major victory for international law enforcement agencies in their ongoing fight against transnational crime.
