“The Heritage in Stitches” Exhibition Showcases Uzbek Embroidery in Astana

The National Museum of Kazakhstan in Astana is currently hosting “The Heritage in Stitches” exhibition, featuring the art of Uzbek embroidery. The exhibition opened on March 19 and will run through June 1, giving the public a rare opportunity to see exquisite exhibits from top museums in Uzbekistan.

Visitors to the exhibition will be able to marvel at 122 intricate items, including gold-embroidered men’s and women’s robes, traditional skullcaps adorned with gulduzi and zaminduzi embroidery, as well as paranjas and chachvans decorated with hand embroidery and weaving. The collection also includes stunning jewelry pieces and suzani, ornate tribal textiles from various regions in Uzbekistan.

Saida Mirziyoyeva, assistant to the President of Uzbekistan, highlighted the importance of the exhibition in showcasing centuries-old art and craftsmanship, while also fostering cultural ties between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. She emphasized the deep historical ties between the two countries and the significance of cultural cooperation in strengthening neighborly relations.

Bobur Sayomov, head of the Center for the Restoration of Cultural Heritage under the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation, shared that some objects on display underwent a restoration process specifically for this exhibition. Over 30 museum exhibits were restored in preparation for the event, and a scientific catalog dedicated to the exhibition is also in the works.

The exhibition was organized by the foundation, which is dedicated to preserving, promoting, and supporting Uzbekistan’s cultural heritage. In September 2025, the foundation will host the first Bukhara Biennale, further showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region.

“The Heritage in Stitches” exhibition is not only a celebration of Uzbek embroidery but also a testament to the enduring cultural connections between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Visitors to the National Museum of Kazakhstan in Astana are invited to embark on a journey through the history of sewing and embroidery traditions of Uzbekistan until the exhibition concludes on June 1.
