Experience St. Martin’s Day at the Open Air Museum with Special Goose Dishes
The Hungarian Open Air Museum (Szentendre Skanzen, near Budapest) is preparing to host the St. Martin’s New Wine Festival and Goose Feast on November 9 and 10. This two-day event will feature products from local wineries, delicious goose dishes, handicrafts, and various activities for children.
St. Martin’s Day, which honors the soldier-turned-bishop, is celebrated in Western European countries with lantern parades and in Hungary with feasts and entertainment. At the museum’s event, visitors can discover the origins of St. Martin’s Day traditions centered around geese and experience the autumn community work atmosphere. The Lajta Folk Dance Ensemble will bring the festive vibe of St. Martin’s Day to life in the museum’s ‘Kisalföld region.’
The program includes storytelling sessions for children, a historical and literary wine workshop, an autumn delicacies and handicrafts fair, and mouth-watering goose dishes at the Skanzen Restaurant. Children will have the opportunity to participate in craft activities such as making stuffed animals, autumn earrings, chestnut figurines, and lanterns for the St. Martin’s Day parade.
In the evening, visitors can join a gastronomic tour focusing on sustainable cuisine. The tour will showcase autumn flavors and highlight autumn-winter food preparation and preservation techniques. Don’t miss this chance to immerse yourself in Hungarian traditions and enjoy a fun-filled weekend at the Hungarian Open Air Museum.
