Vulnerable groups such as young children, the elderly, pregnant women, disabled individuals, those with chronic illnesses, and individuals who are overweight are at higher risk. To protect oneself from the harmful effects of hot weather, it is essential to follow some simple yet effective rules.

Firstly, it is crucial to stay hydrated by consuming at least 2-2.5 liters of water daily, regardless of thirst. During intense physical activity or sports outside, it is recommended to drink 2-4 glasses of water per hour, adjusting the intake according to personal needs. Individuals in the high-risk group should monitor themselves for signs of heat-related illnesses throughout the day.

To regulate body temperature, take frequent showers if possible. If not, wetting the feet, hands, face, and neck with cold water or using a wet towel can help. Opt for bedding that does not retain heat and, if available, sleep in air-conditioned or cool rooms. Avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, especially between 10:00-16:00 when the sun’s harmful effects are most intense. If going outside is necessary, stay in shaded and air-conditioned areas, avoid strenuous physical exertion, and take frequent breaks.

Additionally, it is essential to protect oneself from the sun’s harmful rays. Wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing, use hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen with appropriate SPF. Never leave children unattended in parked vehicles. Incorporate exercise into your routine, preferably during the cooler morning and evening hours. Remember, sun rays can damage the skin and eyes, so choose sunglasses with UV protection and apply sunscreen to protect sensitive skin.

Avoid consuming food sold outside or in open spaces. If you experience symptoms such as persistent headaches, double vision, frequent vomiting, or nausea after prolonged exposure to the sun or heat, seek immediate medical attention. Dr. Karaca warns that many patients seeking emergency medical services during the summer months failed to take necessary precautions.
