“Expert Recommends Exercise and Tobacco Avoidance for Asthma Management on World Asthma Day”

May 2 was World Asthma Day, and Turkish Thoracic Society TRNC Representative and Chest Diseases Specialist Prof. Dr. Füsun Yıldız highlighted the importance of proper medication use, avoiding triggers, regular exercise, yearly flu vaccines, and avoiding tobacco products to manage asthma. Every year, a new theme is decided upon for World Asthma Day, and this year’s theme was “Hand in Hand for Correct Diagnosis and Correct Treatment in Asthma”. According to the World Health Organization, there are an estimated one million asthmatic patients worldwide, with over 400 thousand deaths attributed to the disease each year. Climate change is also having an impact on asthma, with humid conditions and air pollution contributing to increased instances of allergic diseases and asthma attacks. Treatment for asthma aims to control symptoms by administering medication and avoiding triggers, but there is no drug treatment that entirely eliminates asthma. Inhalers are often used for their therapeutic effect with fewer side effects. It is crucial to use inhalers correctly and regularly to ensure effective treatment. Finally, Yıldız stressed the importance of avoiding tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products, to keep asthma under control.
