Exploring Japanese Music and Dance in Ashgabat Orient
Japanese artists Kikuchi Yutaka and Ueda Chiho Delight Turkmenistan with Master Classes
From February 19 to 23, Japanese artists Kikuchi Yutaka and Ueda Chiho are making a cultural impact in Turkmenistan by conducting master classes on Japanese national music and dance in educational institutions. The duo visited the Turkmen National Conservatory named after Maya Kulieva on February 19, where Kikuchi Yutaka showcased the art of playing the shamisen, a traditional three-stringed plucked musical instrument from Japan. Meanwhile, Ueda Chiho mesmerized the audience with her performance of Japanese national dance.
During their visit, the Japanese artists shared insights into traditional Japanese culture with teachers and students at the conservatory, incorporating musical and dance performances into their storytelling. In return, Turkmen conservatory students specializing in folk musical instruments presented the guests with Turkmen musical and song art, creating a harmonious exchange of two distinct national cultures that left a lasting impression on all participants.
The engaging meetings continued on February 20 at the Special Music School named after D. Ovezov and the Turkmen State Institute of Culture. Here, Japanese cultural figures introduced young people to the Kabuki theater, national dances, and folk singing. The student folklore and dance group “Miras” showcased the popular Turkmen dance “Kushtdepdi,” while the guests explored the historical and cultural heritage of the Turkmen people at the Institute’s museum.
As part of their stay in Turkmenistan, Kikuchi Yutaka and Ueda Chiho are scheduled to perform at a reception celebrating Emperor Naruhito’s 65th birthday, organized by the Japanese Embassy on February 21. Renowned musician Kikuchi Yutaka, known for promoting Japanese musical art globally, has performed in countries like the United States, Spain, China, Germany, and Romania. Ueda Chiho, a graduate of Tokyo University of the Arts, has captivated audiences worldwide with her dance artistry, leaving a lasting impression on those commemorating the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Turkmenistan and Japan.
The presence of these talented Japanese artists not only enriches cultural exchanges but also fosters mutual understanding and appreciation between Turkmenistan and Japan.
