Exploring Substance Abuse in Northern Cyprus: Trends, Risks, and Interventions

A new book titled “Substance Abuse in Northern Cyprus, Trends, Risks and Interventions” has been launched by the Prime Ministry Anti-Drug Commission in collaboration with various civil society organizations.

The launch event, which took place at the Acapulco Hotel, was attended by representatives of Civil Society Organizations and academics who contributed to the creation of the book.

During the event, Teyfide Tecel Hatipoğlu, President of the Prime Ministry Anti-Drug Commission, highlighted the importance of the book in the fight against substance addiction in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. She mentioned that the book contains valuable scientific data on the age of onset of substance addiction, types, and consequences, serving as an essential resource in the battle against drugs and substance addiction.

Soner Yıldırım, first-class Police Chief of the General Directorate of Security of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Turkey, shared insights on the fight against drug and substance use in Turkey. He emphasized the importance of cooperation from all segments of society in combatting drug and substance addiction in Northern Cyprus.

Editors Professor Doctor Nebile Dağlıoğlu and Doctor Sevcan Kılınç Akıncı, who were involved in the preparation of the book, described it as a significant milestone in the field.

Sakine Aydın, Secretary General of the Tangül Çağıner Children’s Aid Foundation, highlighted the importance of the fight against drug and substance addiction for a healthy society, affirming their commitment to contributing to such efforts.

Meryem Özkurt, Board Member of the Turkish Cypriot Entrepreneurial Women’s Association and Director of the Bayrak Radio and Television Corporation, emphasized the urgency of addressing the issue of drug and substance abuse in today’s society. She suggested the implementation of public service announcements to raise awareness about this problem effectively.

The event concluded with the presentation of 10 different academic and statistical studies included in the book, showcasing the collective effort towards combating substance abuse in Northern Cyprus.
