One person has died and two others have been injured in a stabbing incident that occurred at a community center in Leiden, Netherlands. The victim who died was a 66-year-old resident of the city, while one of the injured individuals is in critical condition. The stabbing took place at Diaconaal Centrum De Bakkerij, a facility run jointly by churches to provide assistance and support to various groups, including refugees, homeless individuals, and those facing financial difficulties. The center is also home to other organizations, such as VluchtellingenWerk and Straatpastoraat Leiden, which offer assistance to refugees and pastoral services to those living on the streets.
The victims include an employee and a volunteer of De Bakkerij, as well as another individual who works for one of the center’s tenants. It has not been disclosed which of the three victims died in the incident.
The suspect fled the scene shortly after the incident occurred. Initial descriptions described the suspect as having a darker complexion with short hair and a beard, but it was later corrected to a lighter skin tone. The suspect may have sustained a head wound and was last seen wearing a blue t-shirt, dark pants, and a black hat. The police have advised the public not to approach the suspect but to inform them immediately if they see him.
The motive behind the stabbing remains unclear, but speculations have been made about the suspect possibly being a client of the center or a refugee facing psychological issues. The police are utilizing all available resources to track down the suspect and have urged anyone with information or camera footage from the scene to come forward.
Counseling services have been provided to two witnesses who were present in the building during the incident. As the investigation continues, concrete information regarding the victims and the extent of their injuries remains scarce.
