Final Rest for Pope Francis

Pope Francis Laid to Rest at Basilica of Saint Mary Major
In a solemn ceremony, Pope Francis, the 266th Pope, has been interred at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major (Santa Maria Maggiore) in Rome. The burial took place in the presence of a small circle of attendees, including several prominent cardinals, as reported by international media outlets.
Prior to the burial, images showcasing the Pope’s resting place were released. His grave features a marble slab inscribed with the name "Franciscus" in Latin. Notably, Pope Francis had personally selected this burial site—a niche located between the Sforza and Pauline Chapels. The Pauline Chapel, named after Pope Paul V Borghese, is also the final resting place of this pontiff. This chapel houses a revered icon of the Virgin Mary, Protector of Rome, a figure of great significance to the late Pope, who often prayed before it, even shortly before his death.
In accordance with his wishes, Pope Francis’s coffin was placed below the floor level, honoring his desire to be "buried in the earth." This practice aligns with Catholic traditions, which often entail sealing coffins within walls.
With his burial, Pope Francis joins an exclusive group as the eighth pontiff to be interred at this illustrious basilica; the last papal burial there occurred in the latter part of the 17th century. While the basilica is located on Esquiline Hill in Rome, it operates under the jurisdiction of the Vatican.
The legacy of Pope Francis will undoubtedly resonate within the Church and the hearts of many around the world.
