“Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin Seeks Divorce”
Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin and her husband, Finnish footballer Markus Raikkonen, have announced their separation after 19 years of marriage. The joint decision was revealed on Instagram and quickly became one of the “most read news” in Finland. The couple’s post expressed gratitude for the time spent together and their daughter, while also stating that they will remain best friends. They demanded privacy and will not comment further on the matter.
Despite the separation, Marin remains in office as Finland’s Prime Minister temporarily until a new coalition government is formed. In the 2019 general elections, Marin’s Social Democratic Party received 19.9 percent of the vote, just behind the National Coalition Party and the True Finns Party. The leader of the National Coalition Party, which won the most votes in the recent elections, is currently in coalition talks with the True Finns Party, the Swedish People’s Party, and the Christian Democrats Party to form a government that requires over 100 deputies in the 200-seat parliament.
While the news of Marin’s separation is undoubtedly personal, it remains to be seen if it will have any impact on her role as Prime Minister during the current political climate in Finland.
