Fishing Boat Sinks After Confrontation with Taiwan Coast Guard
A Fishing Boat Capsizes Near Taiwan, Leading to Conflict
A recent incident involving the capsizing of a fishing boat near Kinmen Island has caused tension between China and Taiwan. According to the Taiwan Coast Guard, the boat capsized just one nautical mile off the coast of Kinmen Island.
Out of the four Chinese fishermen on board, only two were rescued, while the other two tragically drowned. In response to the incident, China’s Taiwan Relations Office issued a statement condemning the Taiwan administration and demanding a thorough investigation into the matter. The statement accused the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration of using aggressive methods to control Chinese fishing boats, even during the Spring Festival celebration in both China and Taiwan.
The incident has also brought to light the ongoing sovereignty dispute between China and Taiwan. Despite being claimed by China as part of its territory, Taiwan has maintained de facto independence since 1949. The separation and sovereignty dispute between the two sides continues to be a focal point of tension between mainland China and Taiwan.
Kinmen Island, located approximately 10 kilometers from the city of Xiam in China’s Fujian province, is under the jurisdiction of Taiwan but is geographically closer to the Chinese mainland. The incident has sparked further conflict and raised questions about the relationship between China and Taiwan.
