Israel Reportedly Considers Transferring Gazans to Sinai Desert
Reports have emerged that Israel’s intelligence ministry is contemplating a plan to relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to the largely uninhabited Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. The ministry’s proposal aims to transfer approximately 2.3 million Palestinians to the desert region, with alleged assertions that such a move would have positive long-term strategic consequences.
According to the ministry’s document dated October 13, the plan involves initially relocating the civilian population to tent cities in North Sinai before eventually establishing permanent cities. Additionally, it suggests the creation of a security zone within Israel to prevent the displaced Palestinians from returning.
However, Israeli officials have referred to the plan as “hypothetical research,” emphasizing that it is not binding. While the proposal has stirred some controversy, with critics raising concerns over the forced transfer of individuals, the Israeli government maintains that it is only theoretical at this stage.
Responding to the reports, a spokesperson for the Palestinian presidency expressed their rejection of such a transfer, stating, “We do not accept being transferred anywhere; we will not allow what happened in 1948 to happen again.” The reference to 1948 alludes to the displacement of Palestinians during the establishment of the State of Israel.
It remains to be seen whether this proposal will gain further traction or be discarded as mere speculation. Nonetheless, the potential implications of transferring a significant number of Gazans to the Sinai Desert continue to spark debates among various stakeholders, both within and outside the region.
