Biden Commends Blinken’s Visit as US-China Relations Show Progress
In a press conference held in Palo Alto, California, US President Joe Biden addressed journalists’ questions regarding his administration’s policies to combat climate change. When asked about whether he had met with US Foreign Minister Antony Blinken, who was currently in Beijing, Biden clarified that he had communicated with him through National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.
Regarding Blinken’s visit to China, Biden expressed his satisfaction with his performance, stating that Blinken “has done a very good job.” He further emphasized that they are on the right track in improving relations with China, highlighting the progress made during Blinken’s visit.
Blinken’s visit to Beijing marks an important milestone as he became the highest-ranking US official to engage with China since Biden assumed office earlier this year. During his two-day official visit, Blinken held meetings with his Chinese counterpart, China Gang, as well as with China’s most senior diplomat, Wang Yi, who serves as the Director of the Central Foreign Relations Commission Office of the Communist Party of China (CCP), and President Xi Jinping.
The meeting between Blinken and Chinese officials addresses several pressing issues, including the Taiwan situation, military tensions in the South China Sea, economic and technological competition, and concerns regarding human rights. These are areas of contention that have challenged bilateral relations between the two countries.
The significance of Blinken’s visit lies in its role as a decisive step to restore diplomatic communication, which had been strained following an incident in February involving a Chinese high-altitude balloon entering US airspace, causing a crisis between the two nations.
