Foreign Minister Fidan Holds Meeting with NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg

Turkey, Finland, and Sweden to Discuss Sweden’s Application at NATO Headquarters
Following a meeting between Hakan Fidan, Turkey’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, and NATO Secretary-General, Jens Stoltenberg, delegations from Turkey, Finland, and Sweden are expected to convene for discussions on Sweden’s application to join NATO. The meeting, hosted by Stoltenberg, will also include İbrahim Kalın, the Head of MIT (Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization), Ambassador Akif Çağatay Kılıç, Chief Advisor to the President, and Ambassador Burak Akçapar, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The primary focus of the meeting will be to assess the progress made by Finland and Sweden since the previous meeting held in Ankara on June 14th, based on the Triple Memorandum. The discussions will particularly delve into the different aspects of counterterrorism efforts.
In an important development before the NATO Madrid Summit, the Triple Memorandum was signed by Turkey, Finland, and Sweden on June 28th, 2022. This led to the establishment of the Permanent Joint Mechanism, which aims to strengthen cooperation between the three nations. The ongoing talks held at NATO serve as the fifth meeting under this mechanism.
As Sweden seeks to become a NATO member, these discussions hold great significance in assessing its readiness and commitment to the alliance. The outcomes of the meeting will potentially shape Sweden’s future path towards NATO membership.
