Former Mayor of Cholpon-Ata Arrested for Funding Organized Crime Group
The State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan (SCNS) has made a significant arrest, detaining a citizen of the Kyrgyz Republic known in criminal circles as “Potap.” S.T.K. was found to have close ties with the crime boss Kamchi Kolbaev, who supported his election as mayor of Cholpon-Ata city in 2017.
It has been revealed that S.T.K. used his position in the criminal underworld to offer protection to individuals and businesses in exchange for money. Following an investigation, S.T.K. was apprehended on March 13, 2025, and subsequently placed in institution No. 21 of the State Penitentiary Service under the Ministry of Justice of the Kyrgyz Republic.
This arrest underscores the ongoing efforts by authorities to crack down on organized crime and corruption in the country. As more information comes to light, it is hoped that further actions will be taken to ensure justice and accountability in Kyrgyzstan.
