Former Prime Minister Khan Granted Bail by Pakistan’s Supreme Court

The Court Orders PTI Leaders to Submit Bail Bonds Worth 1 Million Pakistani Rupees Each

The Pakistan Justice Action Party (PTI) leaders Imran Khan and Qureshi have been ordered by the Court to submit two bail bonds worth 1 million Pakistani rupees each, as reported by Dawn. The Special Court in Pakistan formally accused Khan and Qureshi of violating the State Secrets Act in October, leading to their trial for disclosing state secrets under the State Secrets Law. However, both Khan and Qureshi have denied the accusations.

PTI had previously appealed to the Supreme Court for bail for Khan and Qureshi, citing that bail should not be used as a form of punishment under court rules. Imran Khan was arrested on August 5 and was imprisoned after an arrest warrant was issued for him in a corruption case. His 3-year prison sentence within the scope of the case was postponed on August 29, and he was ordered to be released on bail. However, the detention period for Khan was extended on August 30, based on the request of the prosecutor’s office, due to the accusation of revealing state secrets.

Former Foreign Minister Qureshi was also arrested at his home in Islamabad on August 19 for a similar reason. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had filed a case against both former Prime Minister Khan and his deputies for violating the State Secrets Act. The trial and legal proceedings continue as the accused leaders navigate the challenges in the legal system.
