Former Soldier Surrenders After Drowning Black Homeless Man in New York
Former US Marine, Daniel Penny, has been taken to Manhattan Criminal Court after causing the death of a homeless man, Jordan Neely, on May 1. Eyewitnesses reported that Neely exhibited aggressive behavior towards passengers at a subway station but did not physically attack them. Penny attempted to restrain Neely and ended up strangling him to death. Penny was initially detained but later released, and his lawyer stated that he was protecting himself and other passengers at the time of the incident. However, Neely’s death has caused outrage and protests. Reports in US media reveal that Neely had been detained 42 times previously for charges including non-payment of wages, theft, and assaulting three women. Penny served four years in the US Navy and was discharged with the rank of sergeant in June 2021. Penny’s lawyer has said that his client did not want to be harmed and acted in a dignified manner throughout the proceedings. Penny is expected to appear in court later today.
