Japan Installs Emergency Food Machines in Earthquake-Prone Areas
Japan has installed two emergency food machines in the city of Ako, located in a region that seismologists predict will be hit by a powerful earthquake in the coming decades. The machines contain 150 emergency food items, including bottles and cans of soft drinks and nutritional supplements, and are placed near evacuation shelters. These machines are designed to “unlock” and dispense their contents for free in the event of a heavy rain warning or evacuation order following an earthquake with a magnitude greater than seven on the Japanese seismic intensity scale. According to the manufacturer, Earth Corp, this is the first time such machinery has been installed in Japan, which is one of the world’s most seismically active countries.
In addition, a radio vending machine was installed in a Tokyo park earlier this year to automatically broadcast emergency broadcasts. The radio will be activated by an earthquake that registers at a level of five or higher on the Japanese intensity scale and will transmit vital information from a local community radio station. Japan has been hit hard by increasingly powerful typhoons in recent years, which have caused widespread flooding and landslides. Thus, the government has been taking steps to prepare for natural disasters and ensure the safety of its citizens.
