French MP’s Immunity Requested to be Lifted due to Pro-Israel Stance
French MPs Call for Disciplinary Action Against Colleague Over Gaza Remarks
A group of 39 deputies from the Socialist Party (PS) and the Unyielding France (LFI) Party have sent a letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Yael Braun-Pivet, calling for serious disciplinary action against fellow MP Meyer Habib. The MPs are concerned that Habib’s recent remarks about Gaza in parliament could be considered as “war crime propaganda”.
In the letter, the deputies requested that the commission responsible for Article 26 of the French Constitution convene and conduct an investigation to lift Habib’s immunity. Article 26 of the Constitution protects members of parliament from being tried or arrested for their words or votes during their duties in the general assembly.
During a recent question session in the National Assembly, LFI Deputy Eric Coquerel criticized the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza and questioned their motives. Habib, also present during the session, interrupted Coquerel and stated that “Israel’s work in Gaza is not over”.
The incident has sparked a debate among MPs, with some calling for sanctions against Habib for his remarks. The opposition deputies are urging for a thorough investigation into the matter and are seeking accountability for the statements made by their colleague.
The call for disciplinary action highlights the sensitivity and complexity of the issue of Gaza and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict within the French political landscape. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how the National Assembly will address the matter and what implications it may have for future discussions on the topic.
