Friedrich Merz’s Bloc Triumphs in German Elections

Germany’s CDU/CSU bloc led the recent elections, with the AfD in second place and the SPD in third, according to official preliminary results. The Greens and The Left have also secured seats in parliament.
According to the German Federal Election Commission’s website, the conservative CDU/CSU bloc, led by Friedrich Merz, won the snap elections with 28.6% of the vote. The AfD came in second with 20.8%, followed by the SPD in third with 16.4%. The Greens and The Left finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Despite the potential for a “grand coalition” between CDU/CSU and SPD, incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz has announced that he will not participate in coalition negotiations and will not be part of the new government. This has sparked speculation about the formation of the new government under Merz’s leadership.
Merz has promised to form a new government by April 21, 2025, before Easter, but has not yet revealed potential coalition partners. He has made it clear that his party will not govern alongside the AfD.
The results of Germany’s elections have set the stage for a new era in German politics, with the CDU/CSU bloc poised to take the lead in forming a new government.
