Young Pilot Sets Sights on Becoming Airline Captain
Izmir, Turkey – At just 17 years old, Kutay Karaman has taken impressive strides in his aviation career, fueled by a lifelong passion for flying. Born on February 23, 2003, in a family of aviators, his journey into the world of piloting began at the tender age of 14, thanks to encouragement from his father, Kenan Karaman, a flight instructor.
Growing up surrounded by model aircraft and the spirit of flight, Kutay was naturally drawn to aviation. "We would gather as a family and build model planes on weekends. That’s where my interest in piloting flourished," he shared. His family’s support has been instrumental; both his parents nurtured his aspirations, solidifying his dream of becoming an airline pilot.
At 16, he began formal pilot training, a venture that culminated in obtaining his private pilot license (PPL) while still in high school. "It was surreal to receive my PPL at an age when many are still learning to drive," he said, expressing pride in his achievements. “I’m thrilled to be part of Türkiye’s aviation landscape.”
With his sights set higher, Karaman aims to become the youngest captain pilot for Turkish Airlines (THY). After applying when THY announced a recruitment drive for high school graduates, he successfully joined the airline in pursuit of his dream. "Being a captain pilot for THY is my ultimate goal," he declared.
