Gabriel Attal assumes role as Prime Minister of France
Gabriel Attal, the newly appointed Prime Minister of France, has laid out his priorities for his new position, with education being at the forefront. Speaking at the handover ceremony held at the Prime Ministry, Attal emphasized the importance of education and stated that it will be one of the main focuses during his tenure.
During his speech, Attal also touched on the topics of freedom, equality, and fraternity, which he believes will guide him in his new role. He expressed his determination to work towards controlling the destiny of France together with the President and to bring out the full potential of the country.
In addition to education, Attal also highlighted the issues of security and immigration as key concerns for his administration. As the youngest Prime Minister in the country’s history, Attal aims to address these challenges and move the nation forward.
Attal’s political career dates back to his early involvement with the Socialist Party in 2006, followed by his strong support for President Emmanuel Macron before assuming the presidency. He held various roles during Macron’s presidency, including deputy, government spokesperson, and Minister of Education.
One of Attal’s notable decisions as Minister of Education was the ban on the wearing of abaya in public schools, citing reasons of secularism. This decision sparked controversy and was met with legal challenges. However, the Council of State ruled that the ban did not violate rights to respect for private life, worship, and education.
As Attal takes on his new responsibilities, he succeeds former Prime Minister Borne, who served for approximately 7 years and has now transitioned to a position as a member of parliament. Throughout his term, Borne emphasized pursuing policies he believed were right for the country and underscored the passage of over 50 laws during his time as Prime Minister.
In his handover remarks, Borne welcomed Attal and expressed gratitude to President Macron, cabinet members, and ruling MPs. He also wished his successor success in his new role.
