Germany to Purchase 60 Boeing CH-47F Chinook Helicopters from the US for $8.5 Billion
The United States has approved Germany’s request to procure the CH-47F Chinook Heavy Duty Helicopter for $8.5 billion. Germany, which has been ramping up its military supplies, has allocated a budget for the acquisition of 60 CH-47F Block II Chinook Heavy Duty Helicopters, 140 T-55-GA-714A Turboshaft Engines, and 72 AN/AAR-57 Missile Warning Systems, among other equipment. The contract will be executed with Boeing Helicopter Company, with no offset agreement in connection with the sale.
Germany currently has 70 CH-53G/GA/GS/GE Stallion Heavy Duty Helicopters in its air force inventory. The German Army relies heavily on the NH90 and CH-53 helicopters, but they are experiencing logistical challenges, leading many EU countries to retire NH90s early due to these problems. The 60 CH-47Fs that are to be procured are expected to replace CH-53 Stallion helicopters.
The Boeing CH-47F Chinook Heavy Duty Helicopter measures 99.0 feet, including rotors, with a height of 18.92 feet and a width of 12.42 feet. The aircraft is powered by two Honeywell 55-GA-714A engines, with 4,733 shp each, and has a top speed of 170 kt. It has a service ceiling of 20,000 feet and a maximum takeoff weight of 50,000 pounds. The helicopter has a payload capacity of 24,000 pounds and a mission range of 200 nm. It is primarily used for transport of troops, heavy weapons, ammunition, fuel, material, and water for combat operations and civil and humanitarian aid purposes.
The procurement of the CH-47F Chinook Heavy Duty Helicopter is the latest move by Germany to bolster its military capabilities. The acquisition of these helicopters will enhance Germany’s defense and enable it to effectively respond to security threats.
