Germany’s Population Reaches Record High in 2022 due to Immigration
Germany’s Federal Statistical Office, Destatis, has released the final data on population growth for 2022, revealing a significant increase in the country’s population. According to the report, Germany experienced a record rise of 1.122 million people, reaching a total population of 84.4 million. This marks the highest annual increase in population since the reunification of East and West Germany.
The population surge is mainly attributed to immigration from abroad, particularly from Ukraine. The influx of immigrants played a significant role in boosting Germany’s population. In fact, last year witnessed a notable increase in net immigration, jumping from 329,000 in 2021 to 1.46 million in 2022. Notably, around 915,000 Ukrainians migrated to Germany in the same period.
It is worth noting that Germany continues to experience a trend where deaths outnumber births, a common occurrence in recent years. In 2022, the number of deaths exceeded births by 327,000, compared to 228,000 in the previous year.
The arrival of working-age immigrants last year has played a vital role in addressing the challenges that come with an aging population. Germany’s economy, which requires a significant number of skilled immigrants annually, has found some respite as the influx of working-age immigrants helped compensate for the country’s aging demographics.
