1-ton Sunfish Caught on the Hook in Çanakkale
A fisherman in Gökçeada, İlker Özdemir, had a surprising encounter while out at sea recently. Setting out with his boat to fish, Özdemir and his friends left their longline equipment in the sea and began collecting their haul. To their amazement, they discovered a giant fish in the sea as they pulled in their longline. The fishermen were stunned to see that the fish approaching the surface was a massive sunfish, weighing approximately 1 ton and measuring 2.5 meters in length. The sunfish managed to escape from the hook and returned to its natural habitat.
Reflecting on the experience, fisherman İlker Özdemir shared, “While we were out swordfish hunting on our boat named Kızılelma, we unexpectedly caught a huge creature. After struggling for some time, we realized it was an incredibly large sunfish. These creatures feed on plankton, making the chances of them getting caught in our longline extremely rare.” He added, “I believe it was less than 2-3 meters long. This remarkable catch highlights the abundance of marine life in our seas. However, it is vital to protect this richness for sustainability. As Turkish fishermen, it is our responsibility not only to fish but also to safeguard our seas for future generations.”
The incident serves as a reminder of the diversity and ecological importance of marine life in Turkish waters, emphasizing the need for conservation efforts to preserve these fragile ecosystems.
