Global Life Expectancy Decreases by Over 1.5 Years Due to COVID-19 Pandemic

A new study conducted by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington has revealed the devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on life expectancy worldwide. The research, which analyzed death rates and life expectancy in 195 countries between 1950 and 2021, highlighted the significant decrease in life expectancy by over 1.5 years between 2019 and 2021.
Dr. Austin E. Schumacher, a researcher at IHME, emphasized the profound effects of the Covid-19 epidemic on adults globally, stating that life expectancy declined in 84 percent of countries and regions during the pandemic. This drastic reversal of past increases in life expectancy underscores the potential devastating consequences of new pathogens.
Life expectancy, a key statistical measure indicating the average lifespan of a person, serves as a crucial indicator of population health. The findings of this study were recently published in the prestigious journal “The Lancet”, shedding light on the long-term implications of the Covid-19 crisis on global health outcomes.
