Greek Villages Evacuated as Massive Fire Rages

Massive Wildfire in Greece Forces Villages to Evacuate

Reports from the Greek press have indicated that a massive wildfire, fueled by strong winds, has been spreading rapidly in the region, making it difficult to control. The blaze has prompted the evacuation of nine villages as it approached residential areas, leading to the rescue of citizens trapped in their homes by police and volunteers.

A total of 26 aircraft and 120 firefighters have been deployed to combat the fire, which has also resulted in smoke reaching the capital city of Athens. Authorities have advised citizens to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary, as the health centers in Nea Makri and Kapandritios, as well as some hospitals in Athens, are on high alert due to increased health needs caused by the fire.

To assist those displaced by the wildfire, a special platform has been set up in the Varnava region to provide temporary accommodation. The platform, established by the Greek Hotel Management Association, will offer additional support to aid provided by local governments. Additionally, the Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA) and the Zirinia Sports Hall in Kifisia have been opened for citizens in need of accommodation.

As meteorologists and government officials warn of escalating wildfires due to weather conditions, Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias has declared half of the country under a “red alert”. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has also cut short his vacation and returned to Athens in response to the wildfire emergency.

The situation remains critical as efforts continue to contain and extinguish the devastating wildfire in Greece.
